RockViewer Description
Dedicated to geology enthusiasts, RockViewer is a fun application that gives you the possibility to put together a list of favorite rocks by handpicking them from a built-in catalog. You can look up rocks by performing text or hierarchical searches, as well as view pictures.
Find rocks and mark favorites to create a collection
Make sure that Java Runtime Environment is installed on your PC or the tool won’t work. Following a speedy and uncomplicated setup operation, you’re greeted by a user-friendly interface that shows an initially empty catalog.
After resizing the main window to better fit your desktop, you can look up rocks by entering a text and picking the rock type from sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic.
Look up rocks in text or hierarchical mode
Worth noting is that you can check out terms suggested by the program while typing them, then simply click an entry you’re interested in and add it to the list. Searches will take into account these filters, so you have to make sure the terms are compatible.
The second lookup type is a bit simpler because you can open menus to get a closer view of all rock types, concepts, attributes and values available before making a hierarchical selection and finding rocks in the catalog.
View pictures and detailed rock info
Search results show photos of the rock matches in a thumbnail view. You can click any picture to get a better look at it, switch to fullscreen mode, as well as read observations, general annotations, identification details, basic name, country, state, and other geological information.
Favorites can be added to the rock catalog, after which you can instruct RockViewer to browse only your personal collection when performing new searches. You can also change the font size if you want it larger or smaller.
Easy-to-use rock catalog for enthusiasts
All aspects considered, RockViewer is a fun tool made for geology amateurs interested in building a collection of their favorite rocks with pictures and detailed information. It had minimal impact on the computer’s performance in our tests and worked smoothly on Windows 10.
