DMG Extractor facilitates a simple method for exploring Mac-formatted disk image files (DMG) on Windows computers, as well as for launching and extracting files. It doesn’t contain complicated options or configuration parameters, making it accessible to all types of users.
Explore Mac-formatted DMG files
The tool can be used for testing an iOS beta version on your iPad, iPhone or iPad by extracting the .ipsw file, as well as for the OS X Mavericks Developer preview by extracting the Developer Preview.app or InstallESD.dmg file to your Windows machine.
It’s wrapped in a user-friendly interface made from a single window with a neatly organized structure, where you can open .dmg, .ipa or .zip files to explore their contents.
Open and extract files to your Windows PC
DMG Extractor shows the name, format and size, along with the date and time of last modification for each file and folder included in the image, giving you the possibility to navigate subdirectories and open any file with the associated program.
It’s possible to go back by double-clicking the arrow button pointing to the left, and extract one or more selected files to the current directory or a custom one. Drag-and-drop is not supported in this regard, and there is no context menu available. The destination folder is automatically opened on task completion.
Evaluation and conclusion
The application didn’t burden the computer’s performance in our testing, needing a light amount of CPU and RAM to function properly. It quickly extracted files to the disk, without causing the operating system to hang, crash or prompt error messages in the meantime.
Although it doesn’t come equipped with richer options or configuration parameters, DMG Extractor offers a straightforward solution for exploring, viewing and extracting files from Mac-formatted DMG images.
