ATLAS Description
ATLAS, actually short for Automatically Tuned Linear Algebra Software is an ongoing research project that is focusing on applying empirical techniques in order to provide portable performance.
At present, it provides C and Fortran77 interfaces to a portably efficient BLAS implementation, as well as a few routines from LAPACK.
The BLAS are a set of building block routines which, when tuned well, allow more complicated Linear Algebra operations such as solving linear equations or finding eigenvalues to run extremely efficiently.
