Desktop Recorder Description
While Windows comes equipped with a basic sound recording utility, you may sometimes need to capture whatever is playing on your PC, not microphone input.
Desktop Recorder is a simple application designed for this very purpose. It captures the output of the default playback device, and it can save audio as WAV or MP3 files. It is a rudimentary utility, but it easy to deploy and use.
Just about as simple as a recording app can get
Make no mistake, this program is not exactly packed with features. It does only one job – record the output of the current playback device – and nothing more. If that’s all you need, however, it may be the tool for the job.
The fact that the application does not need to be installed before use is certainly a plus, and it also takes up very little disk space.
Easily record whatever is currently playing on your computer
Once you launch the application, you will see that everything about it is remarkably straightforward. You only need to select the desired format, set the output location and press the Record button.
You can choose between 12-bit and 32-bit WAV, and there are multiple bit rate options if you prefer to record to MP3, though more would certainly be welcome.
Once you have clicked Record, the UI background changes to red to indicate that sound is now being captured. However, the application doesn’t display the file’s duration or size.
Keeping things simple is good, but a couple of new features are needed
Sadly, there is no option to send the program to the system tray, which would make it less obtrusive. There aren’t a lot of settings to manage anyway, so it could all be done from a simple system tray menu.
Also, it would be great if global shortcuts could be used to start and stop recording, something that could be introduced in future releases.
Overall, Desktop Recorder is a straightforward audio capture utility that is perhaps a bit too rudimentary. It works well, enabling you to record anything that is playing on your desktop, but it could use a few additional features.
